The most beautiful regions for a vacation in Austria in the mountains
Heiligenblut am Großglockner
Even the journey via the Grobglocknerstrasse is a special experience. The drive through the impressive landscape, which was formed in the last Ice Age, leads past white snowfields and rugged rocks. Once at the top, the eternal ice of the glacier awaits you. If possible, I recommend going on a glacier trek. A hike through the rugged ice landscape is something that you will surely never forget.
The mountaineering village of Heiligenblut am Großglockner is a wonderful starting point for many other beautiful activities, such as a hike to waterfalls or even digging for gold. The 1000 souls community is part of the Hohe Tauern National Park region in Carinthia. The village is idyllically situated, embedded in a wonderful mountain landscape with many three-thousand-meter peaks. You always have the majestic 3,789 meters high Grossglockner in view.
PillerseeTal in the Kitzbuhel Alps in Tyrol
The PillerseeTal is a wonderful destination and a beautiful holiday region for hikers and families. The places Hochfilzen, St. Jakob in Haus, St. Ulrich am Pillersee and Waidring are suitable starting points for activities. There are tons of hiking trails, from easy to challenging. Many hikes can also be shortened using the mountain railways, which also run in summer. A particularly beautiful hike, for example, leads to the wonderful Wildseeloder See. The crystal clear mountain lake and the fantastic mountain panorama have inspired us.
Stubai Valley
Hiking, climbing, biking, or relaxing in one of the beautiful sports hotels, everything is possible in the Stubai Valley. For example, the wild-water trails, which run along the banks of the Ruetz and past small waterfalls and current bells, are beautiful. You can get very close to the water masses via wooden walkways. You shouldn’t miss a ride on the Eisgrat Bahn to the Stubai Glacier. Glaciers exert a strong attraction on me, the eternal ice and the high-alpine character fascinate me.
Otztal in Tyrol
The side valleys of Otztal, Pitztal, Stubaital, and Zillertal in the state of Tyrol are all unique, beautiful, and perfect for a holiday in Austria. The Otztal offers a special activity, namely that not only does the well-known and popular long-distance hiking trail E5 pass, but there is also the opportunity to hike through the entire Otztal on the Otztal Urweg.
The long-distance hiking trail comprises 12 stages in which you can hike around the entire valley, covering a total of 180 kilometers. You can hike to the highlights in the Otztal such as the Stuibenfall or the Habicher See and discover many other unknown places. The special thing about long-distance hiking is that you can discover many great places that would not be accessible if you were only traveling by car.
Krimml waterfalls in the Hohe Tauern National Park
The municipality of Krimml is located in the Zell am See district and, with its impressive waterfalls, is one of the top travel destinations in Austria. The Krimmler waterfalls are one of the highest waterfalls in the world with a height of 380 meters, which fall over three waterfall levels. On a hiking trail, you can get close to the hangover files and feel the healing spray on your skin. For all those who want to learn more about the waterfalls and the power of water, visit the exhibition in the House of Water.
In addition to the waterfall hike, many other wonderful tours can be undertaken in the Krimmler Achental to explore the national park either on foot or by bike.
Gastein Valley
Bad Gastein in the Gastein Valley is a small community in Austria, are 1,000 meters above sea level, and is part of the national park community of the Hohe Tauern National Park. The formerly glamorous town center nestles against the steep slopes around the Gastein waterfall and is a great photo opportunity. Today, unfortunately, many of the old buildings are empty.
A particularly great hike is, for example, from Sportgastein to the Bockhartscharte. At the end of the tour, the Obere Bockhartsee, framed by mountain peaks, awaits you at an altitude of 2,070 meters and, after another 150 meters, the summit cross of the Bockhartscharte with a fantastic view. Hiking fans are sure to get their money’s worth in the Gastein Valley.
Zillertal with Olperer Hutte
The Zillertal is not only a popular travel destination in Austria in winter but is also worthwhile in summer. Because only then can you get one of the most beautiful views and craziest photo spots that the Alps have to offer high above a huge turquoise-blue lake, surrounded by the Zillertal mountain range, a suspension bridge seems to float several hundred meters above the abyss at a dizzying height. The lake is the Schlegeis reservoir, one of the largest reservoirs in the Alps, and the spectacular picture of it with the famous suspension bridge arises 600m further up. You can reach the spot via a 3km short but steep climb to the Olpererhütte.
Since the Olpererhütte and the adjacent suspension bridge are located at a high alpine altitude of almost 2400m, the hiking route is only accessible in the summer months. Even during the hike, you have breathtaking views of the shining lake and an unbelievable panorama all the time.
Tips for the right hiking equipment
Good mountain boots are essential for a holiday in the Austrian mountains. Investing in high-quality shoes is worthwhile, once bought, you will wear them for years. Hence my advice to go to a specialist shop with good advice to buy shoes.
A high-quality hiking backpack is just as important. This should lie comfortably on the body with good back ventilation, have good shoulder straps, and several individual compartments.
With hiking pants with zip-off, you are weatherproof technically flexible, a fast-drying functional shirt * fleece sweater * raincoat *, functional underwear, and hiking socks * make your look wander compatible. Add a reusable drinking area, a small first aid kit *, and sunscreen and you have the most important things with you.
The best vacation spots in Austria by the lake
Millstatter See
. The most attractive places for a vacation are Seeboden, Millstatt, and Dobrich. Around Lake Millstatt there is the opportunity to spend the night in one of the seven bivouacs. In these exclusive retreats, you are surrounded by peace and nature. At night the stars shine through the panorama window of the little houses made of larch and stone pine. In the morning there is a picnic basket with a fine breakfast right outside the door.
Nice activities are also provided, whether a hike on the Path of Love, a dip in the clear water, or a bike ride around the lake, to name just a few examples.
Weissensee
Now in summer it sometimes looks like the sea of the Caribbean: the Weissensee glistens turquoise green between the Carinthian mountains. Thanks to its hidden location, it is still considered a small insider tip in Carinthia.
It is particularly interesting for animal lovers because not only do eagles and the golden jackal live there, but one could also encounter bears. But they are shy and hide from people. But there are tours with the rangers where you can look for traces of the wild animals at the Weißensee. Scratch marks on the trees, bulges on the ground, or feathers suggest that there are animal inhabitants who are there. Incidentally, perfect for families who want to go on an eventful tour.
If you prefer water instead of a forest, then you are in the right place, because wonderful saunas with a view of the water or even cooling off between the sauna sessions in the lake beckon. The region is also something special for connoisseurs, be it the freshly smoked fish from the lake or a raft trip across the Weissensee – these are impressions of the clear mountain world that will stay in your memory for a long time.
Salzkammergut Traunsee
The Traunsee is the northeastern entry into the Salzkammergut with its 76 lakes. At its northern end is the city of Gmunden with its beautiful promenade. During a stroll, you can enjoy fantastic views of the lake, the surrounding mountains, and the Ort Seeschloss. The parish church of Traunkirchen protrudes into the lake on a peninsula on the south-west bank of the Traunsee. From their small cemetery, there is a spectacular panorama of the mountainous east bank.
.
There, in turn, the 3.5-kilometer-long Miesweg meanders over wooden walkways and rock paths directly along the steep walls on the lakeshore. In the west of the Traunsee, gently rolling hills extend to the large neighbor Attersee. The area in between is covered by the Attersee-Traunsee Nature Park. It brings visitors closer to the flora and fauna of the region in a vivid way.
A refreshing swim in the lake, hikes from leisurely to challenging or simply switch off – all of this is excellent for all age groups at the trustee.
